Black History Month UK

Black History Month (BHM) takes place every October in the UK. It is a time to recognise the contributions and achievements of black people in Britain, from the past up to the present day, through diverse activities such as talks, films, music and art. In this way, and because so many of you out there are language lovers, I thought it would be a great opportunity to not only highlight the relationship between the England and the Caribbean (in other words, my roots!), but also the influence of the English language on speakers from one particular country, namely Trinidad & Tobago.

BHM Workshop

In celebration of Black History Month, then, we have the pleasure of poet and writer, Nneka Edwards, leading a free interactive workshop combining poetry and art.

The focus will be on Creole English and participants will:

  • learn about Creole words commonly used in Trinidad & Tobago

  • read Creole English poems and art

  • discuss the ethnic influences on Creole English
