Struggles, Privileges and Inclusive Language Workshop November 2020
Setting the Context
In recent years, the politics of “race/whiteness”, the struggles of “left-behind working class people”, and the issues around “gender identities” have come more clearly to the fore....
How do issues of privilege and respect for diversity relate to ELT?
How do our struggles and intersectional identities influence our creativity/creative writing?
About the Workshop
To help us delve deeper into the politics of the “big 3” (class, race and gender), we have invited cultural geographer and anthropologist Ale (or Alex), to lead a free interactive workshop combining discussion and short activities.
In the workshop you will:
question assumptions based on race, class and gender;
make connections between global politics and our daily lives;
reflect on both your struggles and your privileges also as a teacher and/or writer;
strengthen your tools to make our language more inclusive while teaching and writing
About the Workshop Presenter
Ale (or Alex) is currently based in Berlin, but has been living between Berlin, Brighton and San Francisco for the last decade. They have lived, studied and worked in a number of different places, including Mexico, Japan, Italy, France, India and China, and their biggest passions (or obsessions!) are maps, mountains and the ocean.
They got their doctorate in geography with a specialisation in anthropology at the University of California. They taught college there at Berkeley, high school in Oakland and San Francisco (soon in Scotland!), and English in China and Germany.
PS: To be upfront about one's struggles and privileges...
Ale’s queer and uses pronouns they & them, they have an Italian and Central-Eastern European background, and are a first-generation college student with working-class background and a middle class upbringing.
Ale has invited-back Karina to co-lead parts of the seminar and is really happy she said yes ☺
