The Importance of Storytelling

All cultures have stories with special resonance and meaning, passed down through the generations in order to educate, as well as entertain. They can be folk tales, such as Ashanti the Spider from the Ashanti in West Africa, which are often epic in nature and speak of legends and myths. Or they can be fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood or Snow White written by the Brothers Grimm in Europe, which are full of imaginary creatures and magic. However, no matter the content, or where they were composed, what they have in common is that they are best delivered through speech.

And, in the sphere of language teaching and learning, the benefits are not just limited to the practise and improvement of listening and speaking skills. But storytelling is also a great way to raise intercultural awareness, celebrate diversity among peers as well as build confidence and self-esteem. Indeed, learning more about cultural beliefs, ideas and values sounds like something we should be doing on a regular basis!

Storytelling Workshop

So, to see out the end of the year, we are organising a free interactive workshop of live oral storytelling.

The focus will be on Your Stories and participants will have the opportunity to:

  • read aloud a folk/fairy tale or original short story

  • relax and listen to some short stories

  • have an end-of-year chat among friends
